On 11/22/2013 our dear classmate and friend 天石 had sadly left us. 天石 suffered a stroke over a year ago and had been unconscious since. He is survived by his wife 戚蓮 and five great children (in order): three daughters, Grace, Ann, and Esther; and two sons, Daniel and Timothy. Their kids at one time or another have been doing good work helping others. This can be attributed to the teachings of their parents. Our thoughts and condolences are with them and hope they will consider themselves part of our Bio10 family.

As we all know, while at Tunghai, because his father was a professor at our department, 天石 lived at home and never stayed in the dorm with the rest of us. He must have missed this part (call it exciting or noisy or crazy or...) of the college life. However, he never missed any of our class activities. He is probably closer to 趙寧 than anybody else, because they went back a long way as they went to the same Tunghai affiliated middle school.

After Tunghai, 天石 went to Colorado State University (Fort Collins, and later joined by 耿中平). He is perhaps the first among us to get his PhD (in Radiation Biology) around 1974. He then went to San Francisco (to either UCSF or UC Berkeley) to do his post doc research. From there his entrepreneur spirit had emerged and his career path started to change...
Since 1978, 天石 has ventured in his own business in Texas. He studied for a dental degree and started his dental practice in the mid 80's in San Antonio, where he called home ever since. He eventually expanded his practice to Houston. All this time he also maintained a business interest in real estate and several product sales. 天石 worked so hard, that is perhaps how, unfortunately, his diabetes and blood pressure eventually caught up on him at a time his business was about to explode...
天石 is a very religious and nice person. While in Tunghai he had brought quite a few people to his church and successfully converted them, but not quite successful with his biology classmates (yeah, we are a bunch of tough nuts). It is worth mentioning that in 2005, he and 戚蓮, sponsored by a church group, volunteered to go to Ukraine to offer free dental clinic. You may like to take another look at their 2005's newsletter to learn more.
天石 is also genuinely funny and friendly. He always made us laugh. He values our friendship very much. Just look at our newsletters. 天石 always invited us to visit with him (and free dental offers!). But few (陳維多 was one) would take the offer. What a shame. It is Texas to blame.
Following are a few of the photos of 天石 in the Alaska and Galapagos trips.

(In memory of a schoolmate)

Now Thomas is gone, we wish him happy in 天堂。

I am very sad to see Tom leave so early. I went to see him and Rebecca while attending Reproductive MedicineC onference. Their #5 child was just a baby.

So long, Tien-shi 天石,
I have saved this until the end (of my newsletter), because if I had wrote about it earlier, the sadness would definitely have influenced every sentence here. It is so sad that we have lost one of our classmates at this stage, or perhaps at any stage, of life. We are all approaching 70, but I guess we do not expect death among us. Not yet.
Tien-shi was (sad to use the past tense) such a tender and innocent soul. I have not seen him for so long, and I still remember him as a big, kind, cheerful, and sometimes awkward young boy. It was unfortunate that he went to Texas a couple of years after I had left. Otherwise, San Antonio is a wonderful city to visit from the dull Dallas. From the stories that I have heard over the decades, he seemed to be the same old Tien-Shi. Still the same big good-natured boy.

Tien-Shi was a simple, pure-hearted person. He was never a complicated person and he said what he thought without calculating what others might think of him. Everyone remembers him as a humorous and happy person. Indeed, one cannot but feel happy when Tien-shi was around. I saw him for the first time after graduation at Brazil when Ning organized the Amazon expedition in 1993. I remembered that I was laughing so hard listening to his fantastic stories and adventures and about his hilarious life with 5 children! He never wanted to hide anything from us and I think that's why we liked him so much. I believe he is in a better place with God because of his almost child-like faith and trust. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8) We shall remember you, Tien-shi.
